Balancing School and Greek Life

Balancing School and Greek Life Being involved on campus is rewarding. Coming to this big institution to focus on your academics can be an individual’s goal. However, organizations and RSOs are on campus for a reason! Not only do they focus on certain aspects students are interested in, but they can also ease the stress of the transition from leaving home to moving into a new town. Meeting new people can be overwhelming, but I promise the outcome of it is rewarding. I started getting involved on campus during my fall semester of sophomore year as a result of attending Quad Day. Now, I am a NOBLE brother of Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc. I am the secretary of my chapter. I am in charge of doing paperwork that has to be done by certain deadlines. Other aspects include writing notes during our chapter meetings. It might sound boring for people, but I promise you that’s not the only thing that I love to do in my organization. Greek life gives the opportunity for students to share common interests with other individuals and embrace either their brotherhood or sisterhood. Since my organization is co-ed, I get the best of both worlds. Being involved in Greek life and focusing on your academics can be a hassle. That is why I have a planner and Google calendar with me at all times. Google calendar, available in either the Android or Apple app store, is a smart way to plan out a month or week. You can color-code each class or event. It also sends out reminders before a certain deadline, but that is configured manually upon creating an event. What I love about this app is that it makes it easy to be organized at your fingertips. If you rather have something physical, a planner is always a good choice. I color-code my events and major assignments on the monthly page that is offered in my planner. It can be a hassle carrying it around, so I always suggest getting a small one! That being said, if you are thinking of getting involved with RSOs or organizations, it is crucial to have a nice balance with your academics, activities, and, most importantly, your social life. Luis Class of 2021 I was born and raised in Cicero, Illinois. Although I entered Illinois as an English major, I trusted my gut and switched to Journalism. Coming to a big institution and being a first-generation student can feel like a handful. However, knowing your resources and getting out of your comfort zone can help in the long run.

Self-analysis is defined as the process of investigating and examining ones personal thoughts, emotions, and behavior (VanderBos, 2006). This concept was popularized by the famous psychologist Sigmund Freud, who studied and researched on the field of psychoanalysis- an outcome of the study of self-analysis (Exforsys Inc, 2010). Therefore, self-analysis belongs to the field of psychoanalysis, which is the study about ones subconscious and conscious mind in our daily life. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Continuous Self Development In Work Business Essay" essay for you Create order Psychoanalysis is a therapy as well as a Freudian theory. The aim of psychoanalysis therapy is to release repressed emotions and experiences, to make the unconscious conscious  (McLeod, 2007). There are various means to conduct self-analysis with the help of tools such as personality tests which gives objective explanations of the strengths, weaknesses and needs of a person (Exforsys Inc, 2010). Self-awareness Daniel Goleman (1998) defines self-awareness as the ability to recognize and understand ones moods, emotions, and drives, as well as their effect on others. Also called self-understanding, it gives a clear perception of ones personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, and beliefs (VanderBos, 2006). Self-awareness (Warmerdam, n.d.) allows a person to understand other people, how others perceive him, his attitude and his responses to them in the moment. Gary van Warmerdam (n.d.) explains that self-awareness is developed through practices in focusing attention on the details of ones personality and behavior which cant be learned from a book. An increasing number of people are recognizing the importance of self-awareness since it is one of the attributes of emotional intelligence and an important factor in achieving success; a deficit in self-awareness can be damaging to ones personal relationships and career (Goleman, 1998). With the help of psychometric tests, we can k now more about ourselves thus attaining self-awareness, then process the results of the tests and undergo a deep reflection to attain self-analysis of ourselves. Now, we can see the relationship between self-analysis and self-awareness. Using self-analysis and self-awareness, we can have continuous self-development of ourselves. Self-development The US Army (2008) defines self-development as goal-oriented learning that reinforces and expands the depth and breadth of an individuals knowledge base and self-awareness. Self-development will complement what one has learned in the classroom and on the job, enhance ones professional competence, and help a person meet his objectives (US Army, 2008). In other words, self- development is the  continuous progression of personal growth by expanding ones self-awareness and improving personal skills (Thum, 2012). Self-development is important to achieving your personal and professional goals. Knowing oneself entails knowing ones abilities, flaws, strengths, and behaviors (Exforsys Inc, 2010). These are essential components to have an effective self-development. The Self-development Handbook (2008) states that it is linked and begins with self-awareness; each supporting the other and raising the capabilities of the individual. Self-development endeavor involves a lot of aspects to consider and apply in order to realize ones potentials. Once these potentials are identified, they become a persons strengths and assets that can empower an individual. Lack of self- awareness can be damaging to ones personal relationships and career success (Reece et al., 2011). In summary, self-development requires more self-analysis and self-awareness is the foundation on which self-development is built (Reece et al., 2011). From Self- development to Continuous self- development in work Organizational changes are creating the need for continuous learning environments that support employees self-development. London and Smither (1999) says that self-development means seeking and using feedback, setting development goals, engaging in developmental activities, and tracking progress on ones own. This assumes that people are capable not only of monitoring their own behaviors, but also of recognizing which behaviors and outcomes are most favorable and desirable (London Smither, 1999). The self-development philosophy underlines the notion that the individual takes responsibility for learning and choosing the methods and place, to pursue goal-oriented learning activities, whether on-the-job or off-the-job (Gauci, 2009).   Self-development also means that individuals must be motivated, feeling strongly about developing, growing and taking action (Gauci, 2009). Organizations can encourage self-development by providing nonthreatening performance feedback, ensuring beh avioral choices for learning, encouraging feedback seeking, and rewarding participation in learning activities and other self-determined behavior (London Smither, 1999). Education and training is a continuing and lifelong process. Mr. Paul Gauci, B.A.(Hons.) M.Ed.(Sheff) MCIPD MIM (2009) explains that the pace of change is so rapid and intense that professional or occupational training can only provide the foundations of knowledge, skills and attitudes on which further development must take place if managers are to remain current and competent. According to Mitch McCrimmon, PhD (2007), some personality types are more interested in learning than others. A quick way to measure ones interest in learning is to take the typology indicator test. Thinking places a premium on competence which is more focused on future possibilities and value change (McCrimmon, 2007). They are abreast of the latest developments in their field. Dr. Mitch McCrimmon (2007) further explains that those w ho prefer sensing and judging value efficiency and prefer to apply existing skills rather than learn new ones. They excel in following complex procedures and get things done in an organized manner, but need more time to learn new skills and adapt to change (McCrimmon, 2007). Often, they excel as managers simply because businesses want immediate profit. Business needs change agents to create better future (McCrimmon, 2007). Gauci (2009) researches that nowadays, self-development has move to a position in the mainstream of management and business development.   According to Pedler (1990 cited in Gauci, 2009) the re-emergence of self-development is attributed to a response to the limitations of systematic and analytical training. It is suggested that the process of self-development enables the attainment of the ability to learn how to learn (Megginson and Pedler, 1992 cited in Gauci, 2009), a continuing openness to experience (Rogers, 1969 cited in Gauci, 2009), and to utiliz e this learning edge (Wick and Leon, 1993 cited in Gauci, 2009) to increase flexibility and adaptability in the organization. Continuous self -development is when one commits himself to improving his knowledge and understanding throughout his career. Continuous development (2009) is an active process involving the individual in decisions about growth and change that is concerned with attainable realities which is the difference between what he currently does and how he can realistically achieve.   It focuses on an attainable and viable role in which the job offers increased challenge, demands and ultimate satisfaction and rewards (Gauci, 2009). Indeed, if continuous development (2009) is a viable way of improving performance and effectiveness in an organization, there needs to be a culture in which it is valued and encouraged.  Organizational barriers to learning such as the lack of information, access, coaching, support; lack of real value for learning and lack of reward and recognition need to be removed (Gauci, 2009).   Learning organizations are those best skilled at creating, acquiring and transferring knowledge and at modifying behavior to reflect new knowledge and insights (Gauci, 2009). Furthermore, encouraging and empowering subordinates to take charge of their own learning can motivate managers to increase their willingness to continue their own development. Analysis Our accumulated knowledge and experience is becoming obsolete as the days go by but the knowledge needed as a manager is increasing rapidly. We need to undergo continuous self-development to overcome the inevitable change and restructuring. Our personal knowledge and ability to apply that knowledge are our most valuable assets. To stay on top of my future career as a manager, I must continue to increase my knowledge and ability. In undertaking continuous self-improvement, we dedicate ourselves to enhancing our earning ability. By learning more, I prepare myself to earn more in the future. I am positioning myself for tomorrow by developing the knowledge and skills that I need to be a valuable and productive part of the economy. Self -Analysis and Self- Awareness Career Planner Test The Prospects Career Planner (Appendix 1) showed that I have a very high probability to be a management consultant, equality and diversity officer, public affairs consultant, environment consultant and a good probability to be a financial manager, retail manager, marketing executive, sales executive. From the result, it shows that I can be a consultant, manager and executive in the fields of management, public affairs, finance, retail, marketing, and sales. These fields comprise the entire business or enterprise which I can be as the manager and executive. To further verify the results of the earlier test, I took the Careerpaths Career Planner (Appendix 2). The result showed that I am interested in things which involves communicating with other people by debating and discussing opinions and ideas to help others improve or grow personally and professionally. My style is administrating which means that I have strength in managing details and creating sophisticated processes that g ets complex work done based on carefully reasoned decisions and facts. I also always can be counted on to deliver what I commit to. Therefore, the result suggested my career choices are in sales, advertising, public relations and hospitality. Again these fields are all related to a business or enterprise. Now no doubt that I can aspire to be an entrepreneur. Since the career planners say that I can be an entrepreneur, I have undergone an Entrepreneurial Personality Profile by Psychtests (Appendix 3) which reported that I am people oriented (89%). This proves the results of the career planner that advised me to pursue jobs that needs communicating and interacting with people such as public affairs, sales and marketing. There is a clear picture that I can be an entrepreneur based on several career planner test. While self-reflecting, I ask myself: Do I have what it takes to be an entrepreneur? Background I came from an entrepreneurial family which is typical of the Filipino-Chinese people in the Philippines. As the only son in a Chinese family, it is said that I am a crown prince in the family with all the negative stereotypes attached to it. Actually, I am not raised as being spoiled and I dont want to be like that. Since I am from an entrepreneurial family, I feel I have an entrepreneurial nature which I probably inherited from the genes of my parents and not influenced by the environment that surrounds me. I remembered when I was a kid, I used to like selling stuff such as pens or booklets cut out from a magazine to my fellow classmates. I then placed my earnings in a piggy bank and save them. More recently, I ventured in another entrepreneurial undertaking. When I was in my undergraduate years studying at the University of the Philippines, I also did a small business of selling and installation Direct-to-home satellite TV equipment to private homes. Satellite TV is popular i n the Philippines due to the geographic nature of our country and the wide range of available channels for any nationality and race for free or with subscription. Engaging in this business involves technical knowhow of the reception the satellite in orbit as well as the preference of customers in the channels that they want to receive. I source the product from an importer of electronic equipment from China which I came to know and market the product through Ebay and other online shopping websites. The business was successful as I have customers as diverse as European expats, Chinese and Filipinos from different islands by online orders and word of mouth from satisfied clients. Some customers order in bulk for reselling. This business lasted for 4 years until a government regulation was strictly implemented that broadcast and communication equipment including satellite TV must all be registered with the telecommunications agency and the person must have a license from the same agenc y to sell the registered products. Since I dont have any of these licenses, I could not anymore continue this business and came to an end. After finishing my undergraduate studies, I went in to help in our family business and I got involved in the marketing and sales aspect as the assistant to my parents. The nature of business that my family engages is importing food raw ingredients with a wide range of items such as dried fruits, dried peas, milk powder, soy beans, to sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and many others from different countries around the world. These items are then sold wholesale as industrial food  ingredients for food service, bakery and catering industries. I am the assistant to my parents in handling the operations and finance of the company. I get to meet and talk with customers. The family business evolved through the years. Since my grandfathers time, we have been an importer and also engage in retail as grocery as it is after World War 2 and our countrys economy is the 2nd in Asia after Japan. People that time are very eager to buy imported grocery products from the United States and we became the official distributor of some items in the Philippines. Then came the government of Ferdinand Marcos, where a lot of social, political and economic changes happened. It gave our family business opportunities and threats. Opportunities such as having inventories of goods before the import control was imposed and threat of the political uncertainty that caused widespread inflation and devaluation of our currency. After the Marcos regime, the economy was in the worst state and affected the business. Intended Career Path After finishing my MBA, I want to experience the corporate world for a few years in Singapore before going back to my home country. Facing the reality, no one but only me needs take the family business into the new frontier. Currently, due to the global financial crisis, domestic political infightings, and other factors, business now is worse than half-century ago and a diversification or a new line of business is needed with the business soon. I have confirmed that I can have a career as a businessman, but do I have the right traits, qualities and personality to be successful in my chosen career? Personality Test The Humanmetrics Jung Typology Test (Appendix 4) reported that I am ENTJ with distinctive preference of Extraversion over Introversion (67%), moderate preference of Intuition over Sensing (38%), slight preference of Thinking over Feeling (12%) and a moderate preference of Judging over Perceiving (44%). The explanation states that ENTJs often find themselves in occupations that require good analytical and planning skills. ENTJs build successful careers in the areas requiring considerable organizational skills and intellectual efforts, presenting a challenge, and calling for creativity. People with my typology are greatly represented in technological and management consulting and among high- and mid-rank managers. They are also able to realize their potential in start-ups where they often fulfill management positions or take responsibility for the whole project. The Humanmetrics (2012) stated that famous personalities sharing my type are world leaders such as Napoleon, former US pres ident Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Madonna, an American singer, songwriter, actress and entrepreneur among others. The Cut-E Shapes online assessment (Appendix 5) evaluated that I want everybody to immediately receive all information so that rumors cannot even arise in the first place. In an unclear situation, I very quickly feel uneasy and therefore I want open communication. In my opinion, it should be ensured that sufficient space and tangible opportunities are provided for personal and professional development in order to improve professional skills. It is important for me that weaknesses are taken into account. For me, care must be taken that people are treated fairly and with respect. Everybody must be given the feeling that they are important. Feedback from Friends My friends provide me some suggestions based on my personality results and career plan. I asked my group mates to answer a Johari Window and state the adjectives that describe me the most. They find that I am an extroverted, and friendly which are my Arena. Ambitious, knowledgeable, able and organized are my bind spot which I came to realize after they told me. They notice that I can work both alone and in a team but prefer to concentrate on my own tasks. They also feel that I contribute positively to the mood of the group. They said that I contribute to the success of the team but also like it when ideas and solutions I have contributed are recognized. But my friends dont know that I am not prepared to sacrifice my private life or friendships for the career which is my weakness. I also asked my friends if I can be an entrepreneur someday. They all replied in affirmative saying that I have the traits and skills for it. Analysis The psychometric tests and the Johari window feedback from my friends prove that I am an extroverted person. My friends also perceive me to be ambitious which I dont realize before. Probably, they think that I am extrovert and friendly for the sake of ambition which reflects my moderate preference of Intuition over Sensing in the Jung Typology Test. But other people doesnt know that I care and love the people around me and not prepared to sacrifice my private life or friendships for the ambitious career which shows my weakness. This reflects in my slight preference between Thinking and Feeling. My friends also told me that I am organized which reflects the moderate preference of Judging over Perceiving. Overall, the results give me optimism that I have the interest, skills and characteristics to pursue a career being an entrepreneur. Summary Figure 1: My Personal Johari Window After undergoing self-analysis, I came to know better about myself. My friends and I know that I am extrovert, friendly, happy and warm which are essential traits for my future career as an entrepreneur; these are my Arena. I am unaware that I am knowledgeable, able, organized, ingenious and ambitious, which are my Blind Spot according to my friends. A person who is knowledgeable and able has the capability to be an entrepreneur. Being ingenious is a trait I like since entrepreneurs need to be creative and imaginative in finding ways to establish profitable business; coupled with being ambitious makes one an entrepreneur with a foresight. It seems that I have these essential traits which I am proud of. My faà §ade, which I myself know but others are clueless, is my weakness. I tend to be caring and loving to the point that I can even sacrifice my ambitious career plans as an entrepreneur. This is a weakness for being an entrepreneur but these traits are morally good as a human being. I am divided deep inside me, will I follow my mind or my heart? Most likely, I will still follow my heart over my mind. Actually, this reflects on my typology test being split between Thinking and Feeling. Taking an MBA is a choice I made. For me, higher education is essential for my future career. I should apply the theoretical knowledge I learned in MBA and put it into practice. I am young going to start my career life first by working in the corporate world, then establish a new business or revitalize our current business. Working in the corporate world serves as an opportunity for me to experience the real world outside our family business comfort zone, a sort of an eye opener. The beverage product that will be developed in the market will be made from ginger. This product aims to help the customers avoid digestive problems, arthritis, and blood circulation. Aside from that, it will give the market a new taste of beverage that is definitely unique from ordinary juices that they can purchase from the supermarkets. We will write a custom essay sample on Sales Management Plan or any similar topic only for you Order Now The brand will be introduced to its target market as a bottled beverage with different variants to choose from. While many love the aromatic smell of ginger, there are still some who do not like its taste; therefore, the product will be produced with different flavors like what the prominent manufacturers had done to their tea products. General Market Analysis The target markets for this product are the young professionals, sports active individuals, and adults with the age of 35 years old and up. This segment was chosen because of their lifestyle and their need for a product with proper vitamins and benefits to keep away from diseases. Furthermore, this is the cluster of the society that is highly conscious about their health. Any person may drink the ginger product because of the health benefits that it may provide to the consumers; however, in order to make the promotion consistent and to easily gain a strong position in the marketplace, all the advertising campaigns and promotional tools for this product will be intended for the segment that is being targeted for this item (Beri, 2006). Industry Analysis. Unlike other consumer goods in the market, this product will have lesser direct competitors because only a few companies offering this type of good to the customers are currently trying to penetrate the market. However, the biggest challenge that the company needs to face upon market penetration is to have a competitive and persuasive approach that would make the target consumers buy the product. Today, Buderim Ginger is recognized as the leading manufacturer of ginger products (Buderim, 2002). Apparently, beverage products of this company will be the direct competitor of the ginger brand that will be introduced in the marketplace. Product Attributes Even though some people are already aware that ginger can be an alternative to other tea products, the product may appear totally new in the market. With the existence of prominent beverage products in the market, the company will highlight the following attributes in promoting the ginger product in the emerging market: ? With a unique combination of ginger and fruit flavors to choose from. ? Aromatic smell of ginger in liquid form. ? Contains vitamins and minerals to avoid diseases. ? For body resistance and health maintenance. Handy packaging for customer’s convenience. ? Different flavors and bottle sizes in affordable prices. Financial Analysis and Sales Forecast The budget allocation for ginger beverage will include marketing research, production, machinery and factory expenses, promotion, and distribution expenses. Prior to the release of the product, the company is expected to spend the 60% of the budget for the development of the marketing plan and t he mass production of ginger beverage, and the other 40% will be allotted for the advertisement and distribution of goods to the target market. On its first six months in the market, the company expects to generate a profit of at least 30% of the entire production budget. Sales Objectives Basically, the objective of the company before and after the production of goods in the market is to make the product salable in the market in order to gain profit; however, the product that is new in the market has a greater challenge than those that already exist in the store shelves. The sales objectives of the company are: To reach at least 30% of the expected profit in the first six months after the release of the product in the marketplace. ? To persuade at least three-fourths (?) of the entire target market to buy the product. Sales Personnel Needs The sales personnel will undergo trainings and seminars before finally selling the product. At the end of the training period, the sales team should have enough knowledge about the product that the company will offer to the customers. Ginger product could be new to the target consumers. Therefore, the sales personnel should possess the will and determination to persuade the consumers that the product that they are going to sell to the public possesses the exact attributes that they portray on the promotional tools. Sales Territory Design The product will be introduced and distributed to selected states in the United States. The limited production and pull strategy in terms of distribution will help the company to evade early decline stage. The states that have the highest population and percentage of target market will be the pioneering market for the ginger product. Sales Compensation Program The compensation of the sales team will depend on the quota set by the company. The company will set a quota for a sales team and give bonuses for every excess amount or work that the sales personnel will accomplish to promote and sell the product. Sales Personnel Qualifications The product that will be sold in the market may capture the attention of the market because of the idea that it is new in the market. However, this fact may also be the reason why the target customers may overlook the item. In this manner, the company needs to hire people who have enough knowledge and information about the product that is being sold in the market and capability to persuade the customers regardless of the uniqueness of the ginger product. Performance Measurement The number of sales done and percentage of the target market that the sales team has acquired will be the basis of performance of the sales personnel. The number of deal closed will be taken into consideration, and the profit that the company gained will be evaluated to measure the effectiveness of the sales strategies. Famous Examples of Early Interracial Marriage

Famous Examples of Early Interracial Marriage The U.S. Supreme Court did not lift the nationwide ban on interracial marriage until June 12, 1967. But years before the high court’s pivotal decision, dozens of celebrities in and out of Hollywood partnered with couples of different racial backgrounds. This list includes 12  actors, athletes, authors, singers and socialites collectively who crossed the color line for love long before interracial marriage became widely accepted. Jack Johnson’s White Wives During a time in which black men could be lynched for even looking at a white woman the â€Å"wrong way,† boxer Jack Jackson started romantic relationships with several white women. After romancing a series of prostitutes who were black and white alike, Johnson married New York socialite Etta Terry Duryea  in Pittsburgh in January 1911. The couple tried to keep their marriage a secret, but a year after the interracial couple tied the knot word of their union spread back to Brooklyn. The abusive nature of her relationship with Johnson, the death of her father, disapproval of her interracial marriage and a history of depression all likely contributed to Duryea’s decision to kill herself in September 1912. Just weeks after Duryea’s suicide, Johnson started a romance with 18-year-old white prostitute Lucille Cameron. Due to outrage over his relationship, Johnson was arrested for breaking the Mann Act, which made it illegal to travel across state lines â€Å"for the purpose of prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose,† according to PBS. When broadly applied, the Mann Act could be used to outlaw all premarital and extramarital sexual relationships that involved interstate travel, PBS reported. On Dec. 4, 1912, Johnson married Cameron. The following year he was convicted of violating the Mann Act for his relationship with Cameron. The couple lived abroad for several years, with the boxer spending nine days in jail related to his Mann Act conviction. Cameron filed for divorce from Johnson four years later because the known womanizer had been unfaithful to her. In August 1925, Johnson married Irene Pineau, who was also white. Johnson and Pineau lived much of their marriage in Europe. They remained a couple until the boxer’s death in a car accident in 1946. In 1964, another man known for his fighting skills would marry interracially. That year Bruce Lee married Linda Emery, a white woman. The biopic â€Å"Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story† touches on some of the difficulties the interracial couple faced, including the disapproval of her parents. Kip Rhinelander Marries Mixed-Race Maid The New York social world was scandalized in Fall 1924 when Leonard Kip Rhinelander, heir to $100 million family fortune, married Alice Jones, a domestic and daughter of a black man and a white woman. Rhinelander, 21 at the time of his marriage, had suffered from anxiety and met Jones during a hospital stay. â€Å"Initially he was just dallying with a servant, as was an aristocrat’s long-established privilege, but then affection had bloomed, and then everlasting true love,† the New York Daily News reported in a recap of the scandal in 1999. â€Å"The father had sent the boy out west for two years to get over his fool-headed infatuation. But ardor did not subside. Now Kip had returned east, and he and Alice had eloped.† At first, Rhinelander did not seem to care what society thought of his marriage. After six weeks of matrimony, however, Rhinelander did not come home to the small apartment he shared with Jones and filed to have his marriage to her annulled. Rhinelander’s lawyers accused Jones of concealing her Caribbean heritage and passing for white to lure him into a romantic relationship. The jurors ultimately sided with Jones but not before she was subjected to the humiliating task of disrobing before them to prove that Rhinelander must have known that she was a woman of color all along. In 1929, Rhinelander and Jones finalized their divorce, with the latter receiving a small monthly pension for her trouble. Rhinelander died of pneumonia seven years later at the age of 33. Jones lived until 1989. Neither remarried. Richard Wright’s Interracial Marriages Richard Wright, the author of literary classics Black Boy and Native son, married twice- both to white women of Russian Jewish ancestry. On Aug. 12, 1939, Wright married Dhimah Meidman, a ballet dancer. At first, he kept the marriage under wraps, reluctant to let the public know about his nuptials to a white woman. The marriage disintegrated after just a year in part because Wright felt that his wife expected to him provide a lavish lifestyle her. Moreover, his relationship with Meidman overlapped with his relationship with Ellen Poplar (also known as Polpowitz), an organizer for the Communist Party. Wright had been involved with Poplar prior to proposing to Meidman. When Wright separated from Meidman, he and Poplar resumed their romance, living together before they wed on March 12, 1941, in Coytesville, N.J. None of his family members were present nor was his close friend Richard Ellison, the author of Invisible Man fame who’d served as best man at Wright’s first weddi ng. According to the book Richard Wright: The Life and Times, Wright feared that his marriage to yet another white woman would make headlines. That book also revealed that Poplar’s family largely disowned her for deciding to marry a black man. Her father never met Wright and her sister cut off contact with Poplar because of the interracial union, according to the biography. Poplar’s brother did support the relationship, however. Wright and his bride would spend most of their lives in France. They had two children, Julia and Rachel. Wright was far from the only African writer to marry interracially before blacks fully realized their civil rights in the U.S. African American. Maya Angelou married Enistasious Tosh Angelos in 1951, Lorraine Hansberry married Robert Nemiroff in 1953, and in March 1967, just months before the U.S. Supreme Court lifted the ban on interracial marriage, Alice Walker married Melvyn Lowenthal. Lena Horne Keeps Marriage Secret Actress and singer Lena Horne married Lennie Hayton, a white man, and her manager, in 1947, but kept the marriage a secret for three years. When the public found out about their interracial marriage three years later, the couple not only received criticism but threats and obscene mail as well, according to the New York Times. â€Å"Mr. Hayton built a wall around their California house and bought a shotgun,† the Times reported Horne said that she and her husband had some rocky times because of racism. She told the Times she sometimes viewed her husband as â€Å"foreign white creature.† Other times she took out the rage she had against white racists on her husband. She also admitted to marrying Hayton for opportunistic reasons. â€Å"At first, I became involved because I thought Lennie would be useful to my career,† she said. â€Å"He could get me into places no black manager could. It was wrong of me, but as a black woman, I knew what I had against me. He was a nice man who wasnt thinking all these things, and because he was a nice man and because he was in my corner, I began to love him.† Several actors and singers married across the color line during this period, including Diahann Carroll, who married Monte Kay in 1956; Sammy Davis Jr., who married May Britt in 1960, Eartha Kitt, who married John William McDonald in 1960; Tyne Daly, a white actress who married Georg Stanford Brown, an Afro-Cuban, in 1966.

Strategic Financial Concerns for a Typical International Investment Essay

Strategic Financial Concerns for a Typical International Investment Project - Essay Example International projects quintessentially engross a broader array of issues than domestic projects and efficaciously, the extrinsic movement from one's own business authority exclaims many unknowns. The factors that influence the investment decisions of the owner with international capital amenities can appear to be a bit intricate and may differ considerably from plan to plan. According to Walewski and Gibson, the accomplishment of a particular project can depend upon a comprehension of the stakes related to such projects. International projects with meticulous reference to investment which are not able to meet factors like possibilities, resources, and schedule often accrue in an array of influences with crucial financial, social, and political consequences (Walewski and Gibson, 2003). Most of the industry psychoanalysts like Hann and Diekmann construe to the fact that the globalization of international investment market facilitates with tremendous opportunities for business individuals to expand in to new-fangled foreign markets (Hann and Diekmann, 2002). Economic and financial stakes influence the selection of project delivery and documents where currency vacillation impersonates a vital role in resolving the segment of the project which can be contracted for represented overseas. According to Kumar et. al, factors like policy corruption is a critical factor in determining the currency crises (Kumar et. al, 1999). Innumerable risks and risk-associated procedures, when assessed by Dias and Ionnou, related to the fact that there are generally two kinds of risk: 1. Pure risk when there is likelihood for financial thrashing and no likelihood for financial gain 2. Tentative risk which is involved with the likelihood of both gains and thrashings (Dias and Ionnou, 1995). Many contracted projects are featured by the incongruity between the contracted date and the payment date (Mehrez and Regev, 1983). It is commonly viewed that such a situation is largely engrossed with ambiguities regarding the cost payments, both innate for the project and the investor who has to ensure sufficient funds for the payment time. However, it can be presumed that the decision maker is in possession of an assortment with both liquid as well as non-liquid assets, and it is exorbitantly pricey to bring into use the non-liquid assets in order to finance the projects. Moreover, the liquid assets or the budget are adequate to the project and can be somewhat deferred for the project, thereby, springing a low return, and partly be utilized for an optional long series of Financial Plan with high

A New Kind of Dreaming – Summary

Anthony Eaton’s a new Kind of Dreaming helps the reader to recognise the various challenges and conflicts that cause the characters to change and grow. Anthony Eaton best expresses Jamie as an outsider that is trying to find his place in the world, while uncovering the secrets of Port Barren’s shady past. This changes Jamie from an adolescent delinquent to a responsible and admirable person. Jaime develops friendships that lead him to trusting and sympathetic qualities that are unusual for him in his past of crime. Jamie faces a challenge to build a stronger relationship with Cameron, but this is an obstacle for Cameron as he tries to understand Jamie and tries to push the stereotypes of him away. Early in Jamie’s arrival in Port Barren, he evolves different relationships and forms a close bond with Cameron that challenges him to trust and care. His mentor and guide in this story is Archie, who challenges Jamie with a dreamtime story called ‘The Wanderers and the Lost Ones’ which makes him really think about where he lays. While Jamie was traveling through the desert with Cameron, he is challenged to take on new qualities and discover a new person. The challenges and conflicts that Jamie faces, turns him into a new and more preferable individual. Body Paragraph 1: As Jamie begins to strengthen his relationship with Cameron he becomes a different and greater character. Jamie discovers more admirable qualities from Cameron such as trust and loyalty. Cameron was the one person that didn’t judge Jamie by his reputation or personality and stood by him the whole entire journey, this was the beginning of their long lasting relationship. This experience was new to Jamie as he spent of lot of his life changing foster homes. He valued Cameron for his down to earth character. This example is shown to the reader from the novel when Cameron says, â€Å"I was out for my morning run when I noticed you lying here, you sure you’re okay? † [Page 53] this shows that Cameron really cares about Jamie and for his welfare even through everyone were judging him for his criminal records and stereotypes of him were soon spreading across the community. Having Cameron in his life changed Jamie and challenged him to become a more preferable person. Body Paragraph 2: A challenge that Jamie has to face and overcome is when he tries to have some sense of belonging to the community of Port Barren. Archie, his guardian throughout the novel, tells him his version of a dreamtime story called ‘The wanderers and the lost ones’. This story challenges Jamie to think whether he is lost or a wanderer. This makes him feel responsible for finding out who is disturbing the balance and it is up to him to try and restore it. This is shown to the reader when Jamie thinks, â€Å"It was weird, no beginning, no middle, no end, no plot. And yet he couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something important behind the strange words. He pondered it but couldn’t make anything of it† [page 126]. The story makes Jamie wonder who he is and how he belongs in the community. This challenges him to think more about himself and what he needs to do to change and become a better person. This also made him change the way he thought about himself, it made him to thrive to do the best he can. Conclusion: Jamie faces many conflicts and challenges throughout the novel and they all have an effect that makes him change in character. Jamie’s close relationship with Cameron helps him to thrive to be more confident about himself. This also gives him the good qualities to trust people and give them respect that they deserve. Archie’s story ‘The wonderers and the Lost ones’ challenges Jamie to look for the answer and made him change the way he though about himself, the story left him wanting him to have some sense of belonging in his life. Trekking through the desert has changed Jamie as a person and the way he looks at life. Jamie experiences countless challenges and conflicts through the novel, a new kind of dreaming, and all lead him to growth and change in the way he lives.

Nigel Slack trying to explain the main reasons behind the transformation of business processes (through the implementation of appropriate technology) in firms belonging to all industrial sectors. His model, shown below in Figure 1, presents a series of factors (dimensions) that influence the decision of a business to transform its business processes. In accordance with the above model, the first issue that should be examined by every firm interested in transforming its process would be whether the technology implemented through this transformation could be related with the current needs of the particular market. If the answer to this question is positive, then the business should proceed to the relevant procedure (transformation of processes). However, this was only the first Dimension of the whole project. In fact, a second Dimension follows in which should answer the following question: what the relevant technology could offer to the transformation of resources in the particular f irm. More specifically, the business process technology would improve the firm s resources mainly offering a framework for the increase in their productivity. If such a target could not be achieved by the above procedure then the firm should avoid the transformation of its processes by the first instance. The effectiveness of the relevant procedure was examined by Slack et al. (2005) with a specific reference to five firms: a fashion clothing retailer, a retail bank, a full-service airline industry, a food company and a company operating in the area of laboratory services.
